In memory of Bill & Judy Townsend
William L. “Bill” Townsend and Judith P. Townsend
Bill and Judy Townsend have been married for over 51 years. While raising two children, they dedicated their lives to serving others. Each passing within a week of the other, their lives have intertwined since the day they met. Together they were unstoppable and had a huge impact on the community.
Bill served his country bravely during Vietnam as an infantry staff sergeant in the 25and Division. He was devoted to his family and his community. He maintained a strong family tradition of honor, legal skill and commitment to the legal profession by winning landmark land use and civil rights cases as a private attorney. He and his family often championed the causes of vulnerable people when no one else would, often at great personal and social expense. In a short time as one of Florida’s top environmental officials under Governor Bob Graham, Bill was named Orange County’s first-ever honorary citizen for his clean water work. ; he inspired others as a mentor to many successful young lawyers in Putnam County.
Bill Townsend exemplified our mission as a provider of legal services to low-income residents of Central Florida, specifically Putnam County. As a board member of Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida (formerly Central Florida Legal Services) for over 20 years, Bill has played a central role in the history and success of our organization. He helped guide our growth and transition, laying the foundation for our ability to serve thousands of customers each year. His devotion to the community was echoed by his wife Judy who was always by his side.
Judy, like Bill, was dedicated to her family and her community. She ran the family’s law firm and worked for many Palatka care institutions, including the Bread of Life for nearly 20 years. She was a beacon who inspired people to become their best selves and better angels in the community. Judy has proven by example that honesty, kindness, strength and humor can co-exist.
Together, Judy and Bill were courageous, dedicated and admirable examples of boldness, service and love. Leaving behind a better world because they were part of it, and an even better place because they were together.
Although their absence is deeply felt by all, their legacy will continue to serve the people they have defended throughout their lives.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida, which works to provide equal access to justice for people in Putnam County and the North Central Florida area, regardless of regardless of their ability to pay.
