LegalKart, based on Gurugram, aims to become the Amazon of legal services

The legal system in India, and across the world, has lagged behind when it comes to technology-related disruptions. This created challenges throughout the system; clients do not have access to legal services while lawyers find it difficult to make contact with new clients.

Legaltech startups are now bringing order to this ecosystem. Such a startup, based on Gurugram LegalKartsays it provides 24-hour instant audio and video legal consultations. This includes advice, property verification and online document verification, among other services.

Founded in 2019 by Arvind Singhatiya, alumnus of the National Law University Jodhpur, the legaltech B2C (business-to-consumer) startup aims to democratize legal access.

“We envision LegalKart evolving into an Amazon-like marketplace for legal products where it will be convenient for the end user to compare, purchase and quickly access products in an affordable way. Our goal is to help usher in a transition from traditional lawyers to digital lawyers,” says Arvind.

Founder and CEO Arvind has over a decade of experience, working with companies like Essel GroupOla Cabs, MetroCash & Carry, ACME Solar and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, to name a few.

Arvind says the challenges he faced due to the lack of legal professionals in various parts of the country inspired him to create the platform.

The startup has both an app and a website. The LegalKart Practice Management app is available for both android and iOS users and has been uploaded to 50,000 times.

How it works?

“LegalKart is not a legal service provider and does not solicit any kind of legal services, but it is a technology platform that helps legal service providers through its technology to manage their legal practice,” says Arvind.

The startup says it uses “Smart Match technology” to connect users to available lawyers. Through the platform, lawyers can manage their cases, clients, team, and finances all in one place.

Lawyers can assign tasks, sync calendars, and also access features such as financial, client, document, and team management through the platform.

“LegalKart is a SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) for lawyers and law firms. Consultation calls are routed through smart matching technology to ensure there is no human intervention and that the calls match the consumer’s specific consulting needs. It’s completely independent software for converting a law firm into a virtual firm,” says Arvind.

The startup claims to have over 10,000 registered lawyers in over 900 cities, districts and locations in India. To use the LegalKart Practice Management app, lawyers must upload their Bar Registration ID.

Also, it has a group formation feature with additional services for lawyers. This is charged between Rs 1,499 and Rs 4,999 per year.

Voice notes, live case updates, collaborative attorney network, client login, and one-click financial management are among the platform’s most popular services, LegalKart says.

Through guidance and documentation, LegalKart claims to have served over 1.5 lakh customers so far.

Revenue model

The founder started LegalKart with an initial investment of Rs 2.5 crore from his personal savings.

For customers, LegalKart operates on a pay-per-minute model. The consultation can take place at any time at the convenience of the user. The minimum duration of a call is 15 minutes.

The platform charges Rs 599 to Rs 999 for audio and video consultations (depending on the minutes used); Rs 1,999 to Rs 25,000 for start-up services; Rs 2,999 to Rs 9,999 for property verification services; and Rs 999 to Rs 35,000 for documentation services.

The startup takes between 15 and 45% of these service fees. The rest is paid to the lawyers.

“We are a product company and we standardize legal products with a fixed price and product description and user ratings for end users to choose and buy,” Arvind says.

According to the founder, 30% of users come from small towns as well as Tier II and Tier III cities. Moreover, 20% of its users come from the United States, United Kingdom and the Middle East.

LegalKart claims to see 40% regular users on its platform. He has a team of 15 members.

The market

According to Valuates Reports, the global legal services market was valued at approximately $680 Billion in 2021 and is projected to reach $824 Billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of 2.3% in 2021- 2027.

The startup competes with LegalZoom, Rocket Lawyer, and Clio.

LegalKart’s business customers include Ola, Rivigo, shadowfax, Zoomcar, spring roleBasic home loans, Innovation Module, among others.

Future plans

To bridge the language gap in legal consultations, the platform offers services in 10 different Indian languages. Its services are available in Hindi, English, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Marathi, Kannada, Assamese, Gujarati and Bengali.

In 2021, LegalKart also launched the “Just Consult” function on its website to consult legal issues with verified lawyers around the clock.

In January 2022, LegalKart raised Rs 4 crore in a pre-Series A funding round led by Mumbai Angels, ShiftAlt Capital, AEVITAS Capital and IIM Udaipur Incubation Centre.

The startup is in talks to raise a Series A funding round by the end of 2022 to scale international markets such as Southeast Asia, which is its main target market.
